INSIGHTS DURING ISOLATION WITH SPANTO OF BORNXRAISED
WHERE ARE YOU RIGHT NOW? & WHAT'S LIFE LIKE?
I’m in Venice CA and as I stare outside it reminds me of a sci-fi movie. It never rains in Los Angeles and it’s dumping right now. People covered in trash bags and wearing masks are riding bikes down my street.
SINCE MOST OF US ARE STUCK AT HOME, WHAT'S YOUR TYPICAL DAY AT HOME LOOKING LIKE AT THE MOMENT?
My day starts at the crack of dawn when my one year old climbs out of bed and starts her day of destruction. I’m working from home right now and trying to keep everyone under my umbrella fed so there’s lots of zoom meetings and emails. We’re also trying to do as much charity work as possible while we can as there’s millions and millions of people in need here in the States. In between I take my 130 lb Rottweiler for walks and listen to Miles Davis to keep my head clear.
WHAT's YOUR FAVOURITE THING TO WATCH AT THE MOMENT?
Aside from watching Trump mumble gibberish all day, I’ve started rewatching Scorsese films. This last week I’ve watched Raging Bull, Taxi Driver, Mean Streets and After Hours. If I need some lightening up Larry David’s always good to make me smile.
ANY SUGGESTIONS TO READ? ANY BOOKS OR ONLINE BLOGS?
I’m currently reading Leonard Peltiers Prison Writings and thumbing through this Larry Clark photo book.
IS THIS CRAZY TIME HELPING OR HINDERING YOUR CREATIVE PROCESS?
This crazy time is slowing things down for sure but it’s also forcing me to pivot and teach myself new techniques creatively. Being quarantined and forced to work at home is different but I feel like it’s teaching me new disciplines I probably needed.
HOW DO YOU THINK THIS SITUATION WILL AFFECT THE FUTURE OF YOUR BRAND & BUSINESS?
If you’ve ever run your own business you know how frustrating it can be at times. Sometimes it feels like trying to fix a car while it’s going 100 mph. Being able to take a step back and look at everything just might be a blessing.
ANYTHING POSITIVE YOU SEE COMING OUT OF THIS?
Positive side of things, we get to spend more time with our family and loved ones. In America we wake up, guzzle coffee, eat breakfast in your car, sit on a highly congested freeway for an hour before getting to your office, warehouse, work for 16 hours.. fight your way back home, sleep, wake up and do it all over again. Not doing that now, I feel like when things go back to being moderately normal I don’t think I’m going to jump right back into that cycle again. It looks like the world is rejuvenating itself. The working class and essential workers have become important again. Everyone is reliant on the people that work in our grocery stores, fix our homes and help make this world run properly and I salute them. It’s extremely unfortunate all the lives that will be lost and we’ll all suffer from this pandemic, but there is a lot to learn from this and I believe there is a silver lining.
HOW DO YOU SEE THIS AFFECTING THE FUTURE OF THE FASHION INDUSTRY AS WE CURRENTLY KNOW IT?
The fashion industry is going to morph into something completely different for a while.
ADVICE TO YOUNGER BRANDS AT THIS TIME?
Use this time to perfect whatever it is that you’re doing and pay attention - things that used to be really important.. might not be that important after this.
WHAT ADVICE CAN YOU GIVE TO EVERYONE ELSE TO USE IN A TIME LIKE THIS?
Be safe. Be careful. Do not take this lightly. Respect your elders. Help each other from far away. Take a time out and respect that we’ve been benched for a reason and figure out how we can do better moving forward. Things are gonna be alright.
